Summer Reading List

Oh the joys of spending your days at the beach flipping through the pages of a good book. Summer is here and with it the inevitable stream of sweat adorning your sparkling body- but what fun would that be without a great book in your hand? I love reading so I have decided to compile a list of the books I have been reading this summer and a few that I am planning to get my hands on and dig into.

Let me tell you something about myself. I hate giving into the hype of whatever is the new "in" thing. Whether it be the newest Batman Movie or Borat, or the Prada Minimal Baroque Sunglasses, or even the Harry Potter Series. What I've learned, when it comes to hype----books are definitely hyped up for a reason- they're GOOD! What a surprise.

I have waited until the seventh book of the Harry Potter series has been published to begin to read the first. I mean if so many people love the books, they're bound to be horrible right? Wrong! Oh I could not have been more wrong! I devoured those books within 2 weeks, all seven of them and I loved every minute of my unsocial fourteen days of pure joy caused by the immensely detailed and realistic world of the wizard with a lightening bolt scar.

So when The Hunger Games Trilogy came out, I was determined not to make the same mistake as I did in 2008. I bought all three books at once dove right into the beginning of the first book of the three, and to be honest, it was quite hard to get through the first couple of chapters but once the plot got going it was hard to put down. I am currently on the third book, but so far, I like the second book the best.

I first heard about this on Joanna's blog and I did not think too much of it. First of all, I was vaguely familiar with Tina Fey, and because I did not find Saturday Night Live particularly entertaining, I was kind of put off by the idea of reading a book written by someone who is a huge part of the show. BUT! A couple weeks ago, while travelling from Boston to Toronto, I had a stop over in Washington D.C. with a couple hours to waste. The newspaper/book shops are the first ones I browse when killing time at airports. I saw this on the shelf, and in the spur of the moment decided to buy it. Never have I made a better in-the-heat-of-the-moment decision (unless you count my impulsive decision to pierce my nose when I was fifteen).

Honestly, this book is magically ironic and the woman knows how to make fun of herself which is an attractive quality in anyone if you ask me. My favourite chapter is called " My Honeymoon, or A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again Either". It's about, you guessed it, her honeymoon...tadaaaa! I don't want to spoil it for you so I will not get into details, but I will give you a clue, something catches on fire!

This is a book for the girls only, unless you are a man who has a particular taste for chick-lit (props to you). The plot revolves around one man, Paddy de Courcy, an Irish politician who is also a sex god and four women who are all connected to him somehow. The story is written in sections introducing all four of the female characters in their own distinguishable font and tone. The individual font is quite a nice detail if you ask me. It makes it so much easier to keep track of who's "life" you're reading about and from what point of view.

Even though the copy I personally own has close to nine-hundred pages, it definitely does not seem like a Pillars of The Earth type of length. It's quite a page turner. Two of the characters are close to my heart when it comes to their professions. Lola, a fashion stylist and Grace a journalist. Both of which I can relate to. And I have to admit, as soon as I saw that there was a fashion stylist involved, I was sold. It was the only reason I decided to buy the book.

This is as far as I've gotten when it comes to summer reading. Once I finish up with all the books I have lined up, the next thing on my horizon is the infamous and unbelievably popular book series Fifty Shades of Grey. I am quite torn between deciding to read it and giving it a red light, since it basically is a suburban housewife's Kama Sutra-or is there more to it than sex?
